3 Songs: On Repeat

Hop Along – “Waitress” (Led by the Blues-soaked powerhouse vocals of Frances Quinlan, the Philadelphia-based quartet released their highly-anticipated sophomore album, Painted Shut, this week via Saddle Creek Records.  Their catchy, folk-leaning brand of punk rock incorporates grungy alt-rock guitar melodies – sounding like Janis Joplin fronting Rilo Kiley for a sophomore-slump busting album that should top many year-end lists this year.)

Sam Cohen – “Let the Mountain Come To You” (Singer-songwriter Sam Cohen, formerly of Apollo Sunshine and Yellowbirds, recently released his debut solo album, Cool It, on Easy Sound Recording Co.  Traces of his previous bands sounds remain alongside his quirky, synth-smeared indie-rock that is laced with touches of prog, laid-back sun-drenched psychedelia and catchy, power-pop for a very promising debut.)

Calexico – “Falling From The Sky” (Joey Burns and John Convertino of genre-defiant indie mainstays Calexico recently released their new album, Edge Of The Sun via Anti-.  Much of the album was conceived in the historic Mexico city, Coyoacán to capture the Latin flavor of their Southwestern-influenced early sound.  Additionally, they are joined by a host of collaborators including, Sam Beam of Iron & Wine, members of Devotchka and the Greek band Takim among others along with Ben Bridwell of Band Of Horses lends his distinct voice to the soaring pop-leaning standout single heard here.)
